About this document
If you are GST registered in New Zealand, a taxable supply calls for a tax invoice showing your GST number and the GST charged. This page opens headed "Tax invoice" with GST labelled at 15% and the business-ID field asking for a GST number.
New Zealand prices are commonly quoted GST-inclusive. Choose "Already included" and the GST is extracted from the total and shown separately, rather than added on top — which is what your customer expects to see.
What a New Zealand tax invoice needs
- The words "Tax invoice"
- Your name and GST registration number
- The date of issue
- A description of the goods or services
- The quantity or volume supplied
- The amount charged and the GST, or a statement that GST is included
- The recipient's details for larger supplies
This is general information, not tax or legal advice. Requirements differ by jurisdiction and by the kind of work you do — check with your own accountant or tax authority if anything is unclear.
Questions
- Should I quote prices including GST?
- For consumers, usually yes — that is the convention. Set the tax to "Already included" and the document shows the GST portion without inflating the total.
- What if I am not GST registered?
- Then issue an ordinary invoice with no GST and no GST number, and do not use the words "tax invoice". Remove the tax section and change the heading to Invoice.
- Can I use this for Australian clients too?
- Yes — switch the region to Australia and the labels, currency and heading change to match. Your business details and clients carry over.
