About this document
Australia is specific about this one. For a taxable sale, the document has to be headed "Tax invoice" — not "Invoice" — and it has to show your ABN and the GST amount. This page opens with that heading already set, the tax labelled GST at 10%, and the business-ID field asking for an ABN.
There is also a threshold worth knowing: for sales of $82.50 including GST or more, your customer needs a tax invoice to claim the GST credit, and for sales of $1,000 or more the invoice must also identify the buyer. Below that the requirements are lighter, but issuing a proper tax invoice anyway costs nothing.
What an Australian tax invoice needs
- The words "Tax invoice"
- Your identity and your ABN
- The date it was issued
- A description of the items sold, with quantity where relevant
- The GST amount, or a statement that the total includes GST
- The extent to which each sale is taxable
- The buyer's identity or ABN, for sales of $1,000 or more
This is general information, not tax or legal advice. Requirements differ by jurisdiction and by the kind of work you do — check with your own accountant or tax authority if anything is unclear.
Questions
- Does it have to say "Tax invoice" rather than "Invoice"?
- For a taxable sale, yes — that wording is part of what makes it a valid tax invoice. This page sets the heading for you, and you can change it if you are issuing something else.
- What if I do not have an ABN?
- You can still invoice, but without an ABN your customer may be required to withhold tax from the payment. Leave the field blank if it does not apply to you.
- Should GST be added on top or included?
- Either is valid as long as it is clear. Australian pricing is usually quoted GST-inclusive for consumers — choose "Already included" and the GST is shown as part of the total rather than added to it.
