About this document
An Irish VAT invoice needs your VAT registration number, the rate applied, and the VAT shown as a separate amount. This page opens in euro with VAT labelled at the standard 23% — change the rate for the reduced rates, or remove the tax section entirely if you are below the registration threshold.
For supplies to a VAT-registered business in another EU member state, the customer's VAT number goes on the invoice too, and the supply is normally zero-rated with the reverse charge noted. The tax label is editable so you can say so on the document.
What an Irish VAT invoice needs
- A sequential invoice number and the date of issue
- Your name, address and VAT number
- The customer's name and address, plus their VAT number for EU supplies
- Quantity and description of what was supplied
- The amount excluding VAT, per rate
- The VAT rate and the VAT amount
- The total payable
This is general information, not tax or legal advice. Requirements differ by jurisdiction and by the kind of work you do — check with your own accountant or tax authority if anything is unclear.
Questions
- Which VAT rate applies to my work?
- Ireland has a standard rate plus reduced rates for particular goods and services. The standard rate is prefilled; check which applies to what you sell, because getting it wrong is your liability rather than your customer's.
- How do I invoice a business in another EU country?
- Put their VAT number on the invoice, zero-rate the supply, and note the reverse charge. Rename the tax label to "Reverse charge" and explain it in the notes.
- Do I need to be VAT registered to invoice?
- No. Below the threshold you invoice without VAT and leave the VAT number blank — just do not charge VAT you are not registered to collect.
